Athletic support for the warehouse
Technology in the warehouse used to be considered only by large organisations, but now with the tightening of supply chains and the relative reduction in costs, more and more medium and small operations are taking the plunge and reaping the benefits of technologies like radio frequency and warehouse management systems.
What is often overlooked, as these systems are implemented, is the not so subtle shift in the role the computer system is playing in the organisation. The company has probably had a computer for years, sitting in the corner of the accounts office, quietly keeping score for the business, recording what has happened. So as a part of your team the computer has been the equivalent of the wheezy boy who was 12th man in the school cricket team, sitting beyond the boundary rope keeping the score. If he didn’t turn up for a few matches it really didn’t matter anyone could fill in and the results could be written up in the official scorebook later on. By implementing a pro-active management system your computer is playing the Andrew Flintoff/Jonny Wilkinson role. It is the major play-maker in the warehouse, and as any fine athlete will tell you, support is essential.
